What is the R factor for Central Missouri?
Often times the homes attic is as neglected as the red
headed step child. It is important to
have adequate access into the attic for occasional inspection and to be sure
there have not been any home invasions by unwelcomed vermin.
Whether located in a bedroom closet or the garage ceiling,
it is important that the entry hatch is also insulated or it will create a
vacuum loosing all the energy from the living space below.
Insulation compresses over time and needs to be freshened up
to have adequate loft for the best efficiency.
Insulation companies can blow in additional insulation to increase the
loft that may have been compressed over time.
The efficiency value of insulation is determined by the “R”
value. The “R” stands for “Resistance of
thermal flow”. The higher the “R” factor
the higher the resistance of heat into the dwelling or heat escaping the
dwelling. R value basically measures the
ability of heat to transfer to one side to another.
Depending on which zone you live in our country would
determine the depth required in your attic.
Usually for Central Missouri – a target R factor would be R49. So, depending on type of insulation used, we would
want to see greater than 12”-15” of insulation (non compressed) in your attic.
